Family Visas

Child Visas

Child visas are for children of Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens. The different types are detailed below.

Subclass 101

Applicant is INSIDE Australia

Subclass 802

Applicant is OUTSIDE Australia

For both visas, the child should generally be under 25 years of age unless the child is incapacitated.

Subclass 102

This visa is for children who are adopted or in the process of being adopted.

Subclass 445

Dependent Child Visa

This visa is for the dependent child of the holder of one of the temporary resident visas:

If the partners have been granted permanent resident visas already, then the subclass 101 or 802 would be the more appropriate visa to apply for.

Important notes:

  • Child refers to biological children, adopted children, step-children or even those born from surrogacy arrangement or artificial conception procedures.

  • The child must be a “dependent child” of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

  • Should be sponsored by parent or the spouse.

  • If applicant under 18 years old, the sponsor or the spouse must not have been charged with registrable offences (generally offences to minors) or at least 5 years of the sentence has been completed.

  • A child who is over 18 must be in full-time studies unless the child is incapacitated for work.
