Skilled Visas

If you have the skills and the qualifications that Australia is looking for, you may be eligible to apply for one of the skilled visas below. You can check your occupation and the possible visa options that may be available to you in the Department of Home Affairs website:

Subclass 189/190/491

Point-tested Visas

Aside from the need for your occupation to be on a certain list, these visas have a further requirement of scoring at least 65 points in the points test to be able to apply. You must submit an expression of interest and be invited to lodge an application.

Subclass 186

Employer Nominated Scheme

This visa does not need you to pass the points test. However, you would need an employer to nominate you to be able to apply for this visa. You need to have at least 3 years experience for your nominated occupation to be eligible. This is one pathway for permanent residency of some subclass 482 visa holders. They must have held a subclass 482 visa for at least 3 years.

Subclass 482/494

Employer Sponsored

These visas would require you to have an employer sponsor you to be able to lodge an application. They are both temporary visas but could lead to permanent residency if you hold them for at least 3 years. If you are at least 45 years old and may not be able to get permanent residency via skilled migration, you may still be eligible for the Temporary Skills Shortage visa subclass 482 as this does not have an age limitation.

  • Subclass 189, 190 and 186 are permanent resident visas while subclass 482, 491 and 494 are temporary visas.

  • The temporary visas mentioned may lead to permanent visas such as the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) subclass 191 visa or even a holder of the 482 visa being nominated by their employer for the subclass 186 visa after 3 years.

  • These visas would require you to have your skills assessed by the appropriate skills assessment body. A positive skills assessment is needed as part of the application.

  • Generally, the visa application would require competent English. This would be IELTS band score of 6 or equivalent. However, the skills assessment may have higher requirements for some occupations.
